ABOUT THIS CAR
Rally Preparation Services have been commissioned to offer possibly the optimal specification Adventure rally car just back from the 2019 Rally Round Trans-Himalayan Adventure.
A “Car for all reasons” was the proud launch slogan. In 1970 Land Rover’s principal offering was the Series IIA which was soon to be replaced by the Series III. Both were very utilitarian vehicles equipped with leaf springs, incredible off-road ability and correspondingly awful road manners. Looking back now the Range Rover seems an obvious development but it’s easy to forget just how revolutionary the Range Rover was in 1970 when only very few vehicles were 4WD and the term SUV hadn’t been invented. The Range Rover Classic (as it became known) retained the traditional construction of a body on chassis but a switch to coil springs, the much loved aluminium V8 sourced from Buick and disc brakes on all four wheels helped to produce a capable off-roader that drives much like a car.
Here at RPS we often get asked “what is the ideal long distance rally car and we glibly reply Ford Ranger pick-up; after all that’s what we take on rallies! Perhaps this is the next best thing? This particular Range Rover is believed to possibly be a 1981 Camel Sumatra support vehicle. Prior to its most recent adventure in the Himalayas a major mechanical refresh has been carried out. A new 3.9 V8 was installed and coupled to a later LT77 5 speed transmission. The differentials and the transfer box were overhauled and just to make sure all the running gear is in tip-top condition, new brakes, new springs, new shock absorbers and even new wheels and tyres were fitted.
The car is currently residing at RPS’ sister company – the SASCo storage facility and available for inspection.
All viewings welcomed by appointment only at Rally Preparation Services.
